What is Ocean Oracle?

Ocean Oracle is a unique system of seashell divination created by Michelle “Shelley” Hanson that uses the wisdom and characteristics of the seashell kingdom to provide insight into our thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and patterns. The system is designed to help people decode messages from seashells and use that guidance for personal empowerment and transformation.

Ocean Oracle brings together seashell reading, personal growth, spiritual exploration, and energy work. The system is available through the Ocean Oracle book and online card deck, Ocean Wisdom, Ocean Crystals, guided meditation resources, and Ocean Speake, an online seashell divination program created by Michelle Hanson.

What is seashell divination?

Seashell divination is the practice of using seashells as tools for gaining insight, guidance, and personal awareness. It is also known as conchomancy, the art of divination using seashells.

Ocean Oracle has developed its own approach to conchomancy based on the individual characteristics of seashells and the animals that create and inhabit them. Rather than simply assigning generic meanings to shells, the Ocean Oracle system explores what can be learned from the unique qualities, behaviors, and experiences of these undersea animals.

A seashell reading can then use those meanings to explore a question, feeling, belief, or situation and provide another perspective to consider.

What is the purpose of a seashell reading?

A seashell reading is intended to provide insight rather than simply predict what will happen in the future. Ocean Oracle uses seashell guidance to help bring awareness to hidden thoughts, feelings, and beliefs that may be influencing your experiences.

During a reading, the characteristics associated with a particular shell can offer a new perspective on a personal situation. This information can help you recognize patterns, consider new options, and identify beliefs that may no longer be serving you.

Ocean Oracle readings can be used for personal growth and transformation, or the system can be learned and used to provide insights for others.

How does an Ocean Oracle reading work?

An Ocean Oracle reading begins with selecting seashells from the posters in the book or the online app. You may feel naturally attracted to a particular shell, or you may find yourself bothered or uncomfortable by another one. According to the Ocean Oracle approach, either response can provide an opportunity for exploration.

The meaning of the selected shell is based on characteristics associated with the animal that created or inhabited it. Once the shells are selected and arranged, their individual meanings can be considered in relation to the question or circumstances being explored.

This process allows the seashells to act as guides, helping bring thoughts and feelings to the surface and providing information that can support greater self-awareness and positive growth.

Does Ocean Oracle predict the future?

No. Ocean Oracle readings are not intended to predict a predetermined future. Instead, the focus is on understanding who we are in the present, including the thoughts and beliefs that may be influencing our lives.

The awareness gained through a seashell reading can provide new options for moving forward. By recognizing patterns or beliefs that may no longer be helpful, you can consider different choices and potentially reshape your future.

This emphasis on awareness, personal responsibility, and transformation is an important distinction between Ocean Oracle and approaches focused primarily on fortune-telling.

How is Ocean Oracle different from traditional tarot or other forms of divination?

Ocean Oracle is its own divination system, although someone familiar with tarot or oracle cards may recognize similarities in the process of using symbolic tools to explore questions and gain insight.

The major difference is that Ocean Oracle is based on seashells and the animals that create them. The system includes 200 different seashells, with each shell carrying its own meaning based on the qualities and characteristics associated with it.

The online Ocean Oracle card deck makes the system accessible without requiring someone to own a physical collection of all 200 shells. The cards feature the shells and their meanings, allowing users to select and arrange them as part of their own seashell divination practice.

What can seashell guidance help me understand?

Seashell guidance can help you explore thoughts, feelings, beliefs, behaviors, relationships, and personal challenges. Ocean Oracle views the seashell kingdom as a collection of teachers whose individual characteristics can provide meaningful perspectives about our own lives.

A shell may help you examine something that has been operating beneath the surface or encourage you to look at a familiar situation differently. The goal is not to tell you what you must do, but to provide information that can support awareness and personal empowerment.

Ocean Oracle’s approach can therefore be used as a tool for reflection, self-discovery, spiritual exploration, and personal transformation.

What are seashell crystals?

Many people may be familiar with crystals from the mineral kingdom and earth element. Ocean Oracle describes seashells as crystals from the animal kingdom and the water element. The shells are composed of minerals including calcite and aragonite, and Ocean Oracle explores their potential connections with energy work, the chakras, and personal well-being.

This perspective gives seashells a role beyond their symbolic meaning in divination. Within Ocean Oracle, seashells can also be approached as energy tools and companions for people who already work with crystals.

The books Ocean Wisdom and Ocean Crystals explore this seashell crystal connection in greater depth. Ocean Wisdom introduces the use of seashells as energy tools and concludes with a guided meditation working with the chakras. Ocean Crystals continues investigating this connection and provides its own guided meditation designed to awaken your spiritual blueprint.

How are seashells used for energy work?

Ocean Oracle teaches that seashells can be used as energy tools as well as tools for seashell divination. Because seashells are viewed as crystals from the animal kingdom and water element, the system explores their relationship with energy, the light body, and the chakras.

Different shells have different characteristics and meanings, and those qualities can be incorporated into personal spiritual practices. Ocean Oracle’s Ocean Wisdom materials explore the seashell crystal connection and include a guided meditation focused on the chakra system. Ocean Crystals add another layer to this connection ending with a guided meditation focused on spiritual evolution.

This makes seashells a natural part of both the intuitive and energy-work aspects of the Ocean Oracle approach.

Can I use Ocean Oracle for personal growth?

Yes. Personal growth and transformation are central to the Ocean Oracle approach. Seashell divination can be used to explore subconscious thoughts, beliefs, and feelings that may be influencing your life without your full awareness.

A seashell reading can provide information that encourages you to recognize what may no longer be serving you and consider new possibilities. The shells are not making decisions for you; instead, they provide guidance that can help you become more aware of your own choices and patterns.

Ocean Oracle can therefore be explored as a personal practice even if you have no intention of becoming a professional seashell reader.

Who is Michelle “Shelley” Hanson?

Michelle “Shelley” Hanson is the creator of Ocean Oracle and has dedicated decades to studying seashells, their characteristics, and their potential as tools for personal growth and spiritual exploration.

Her connection with seashells began during childhood, when her grandparents gave her shells and sparked a lifelong interest in the shells and the animals that create and inhabit them. Her passion for seashells eventually combined with her interest in metaphysical subjects, leading to the development of Ocean Oracle.

Shelley created the Ocean Oracle: What Seashells Reveal About Our True Nature book and card deck and authored Ocean Wisdom: Lessons from the Seashell Kingdom, and Ocean Crystals: Seashells are SEEshells. She has also taught seashell divination through seminars, workshops, and her online Ocean Speake program.

What is Ocean Speake?

Ocean Speake is Ocean Oracle’s online seashell divination training program created by Michelle Hanson. It is designed for people who want to learn how to work with seashells for personal spiritual growth, seashell readings, divination, and energy work.

The program is designed for independent study, allowing students to register at their convenience and work through the material at their own pace. Level I introduces the foundations of seashell divination and the unique qualities of the animals that create and inhabit the shells.

Students receive written PDF transcripts and video presentations, along with photographs, additional educational resources, homework exercises, supervised practice reading sessions, and personal guidance from Michelle.

Do I need previous experience with tarot or divination to learn seashell reading?

No previous experience with tarot, oracle cards, or another form of divination is required to begin learning the Ocean Oracle system.

Ocean Speake introduces students to the principles of seashell divination and gradually teaches them about the animals that create the shells, individual shell meanings, and ways to work with the Ocean Oracle system.

The course can be appropriate for someone who is completely new to divination as well as someone who already has experience with tarot, oracle cards, crystals, meditation, or other spiritual practices. Students can use what they learn for their own personal growth or develop their skills further to perform Ocean Oracle seashell readings for others.

How long does it take to learn Ocean Oracle seashell divination?

Ocean Speake is an independent, self-paced online program, so the amount of time required depends on how quickly each student chooses to complete the lessons and assignments.

Level I is divided into four modules. Module 1 establishes the foundation of the course and introduces almost 50 shells, while later modules continue building knowledge of the seashell kingdom and the Ocean Oracle system.

Students can choose to use the written transcripts, video presentations, or both. Those pursuing certification must complete the required course materials and all homework exercises. The self-paced format allows students to spend additional time practicing seashell readings and becoming familiar with the individual shells.

Can I become certified in Ocean Oracle seashell reading?

Yes. Ocean Speake includes an optional certification path for students who want to develop their knowledge and skills more extensively.

Level I provides the foundational education in seashell divination, including the shells, the animals that create them, and the Ocean Oracle system. Students who pursue certification complete the required course material and certification requirements.

Ocean Oracle also offers advanced Level II training for students who have completed the earlier training. The Ocean Oracle website maintains a list of certified Level II Ocean Oracle seashell readers, including readers who provide in-person and phone readings in different locations.

Is Ocean Oracle only for people who practice spirituality?

No. Although Ocean Oracle has a strong spiritual and metaphysical component, the system is also intended as a tool for self-awareness, reflection, personal empowerment, and transformation.

The seashells can provide a different way of looking at thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and experiences. Some people may approach seashell reading primarily as a spiritual practice, while others may be more interested in the symbolism, psychology, natural history, or personal-development aspects of the system.
